Jewish Ritual Baths – Photographs by Peter Seidel

A few years ago, archaeological excavations in the former Johannisvorstadt district uncovered the remains of a mikveh. Since then, this distinctive form of Jewish ritual space has once again gained greater public awareness in Chemnitz. Mikva’ot are ritual immersion baths constructed and used according to religious regulations. Since 1987, Frankfurt-based photographer Peter Seidel has been documenting such sites across Europe, spanning from antiquity to the present day. In the Year of Jewish Culture 2026, the Schloßbergmuseum will present a representative selection of his works.
