100 Years Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz
In 2020 the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz are celebrating their 100th anniversary as a public art institution. What is more, this year also marks the 160th anniversary of the foundation of the Kunsthütte zu Chemnitz, the civic art association whose collecting activities laid the foundations for the museum. On the occasion of this dual anniversary, an exhibition involving the whole museum building will show a representative selection from the extensive holdings of the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz, the Museum Gunzenhauser, the Schloßbergmuseum, and the Carlfriedrich Claus Archive.
With works dating from the Middle Ages to the present and representing the genres of painting, sculpture, graphic art, and textile art, the exhibition will provide insight into the historically matured and variously structured collections. The conceptual focal points will be on Romantic and Impressionist art and works of classic modern art.
The exhibition will also highlight the Galerie der Moderne installed in the König Albert Museum in the 1920s and famous throughout Germany. Other focal points are the losses incurred during the Nazi era, as well as the different acquisition strategies developed over the course of time.
On the occasion of the anniversary, every first Friday of the month – the »free Friday« – in 2020, we offer all those who are interested a view behind the scenes of our work. For programme details and dates, please check the calendar of events.Directions
