The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz – Schloßbergmuseum will be showing around 100 exhibits from the history of the Benedictine monastery in Chemnitz from 26 August to 25 November 2018 as part of the 875th anniversary of the city. In addition to documents, manuscripts and incunabula from the 12th to 16th centuries, building fragments, archaeological finds and works of fine art make the development of the abbey tangible.
From 1 July to 14 October, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz am Theaterplatz will be presenting new works by the artist Markus Oehlen (*1956). Decisive elements of the works created in 2018 are cords and printing plates. The special aesthetics of this combination is what makes the pictures, which are now being shown in Chemnitz for the first time, so attractive.

From April 29 to July 1, 2018, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz – Schloßbergmuseum in cooperation with the Romanesque Cultural Studies of the TU Chemnitz will show works by the artist Berndt Johannsen (*1951, Weißenfels). In two series of overpainted photographs, Black White Red and Black Red Gold, Johannsen poses the question of the ability of societies, and in particular of the individual, to achieve peace. The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz am Theaterplatz present 48 works by Georg Baselitz (*1938, Deutschbaselitz/Saxony) from the museum’s collection. In recognition of his generous support of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, the artist was honoured at the opening of the exhibition on 16 April by his entry in the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz.
On the occasion of the donation from the estate of Thomas Heumann in memory of his father Carl Heumann, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is showing some 70 graphic sheets from the Carl and Thomas Heumann Collection. Among them are works by Christian Friedrich Gille, August Gaul, Adolph von Menzel and Ernst Barlach.
