On Saturday, 5/15/21, 7:30 p.m., the square at the gable end of the Chemnitz Art Collections will be dedicated as Arthur Weiner Square in memory of Arthur Weiner, a Jewish Chemnitz lawyer and notary Arthur Weiner, by Mayor Sven Schulze and Board Chair Dr. Ruth Röcher. Weiner was not only a respected member of Chemnitz society, an art collector and active in the Israelite community, but he was insidiously kidnapped, mistreated and murdered by the SA in 1933. His fate is representative of the persecution and extermination of the Jews of Europe by the National Socialists; let it be a reminder to us today for the present and a responsibility for the future to oppose any form of discrimination.

Following the dedication of the square, we will open the exhibition Tu BiShvat – Festival of Trees. On the occasion of the celebrations of 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany and the anniversary of the 30th Days of Jewish Culture Chemnitz, the exhibition not only takes a look at important Jewish collectors, artists and supporters of the Chemnitz Art Collections, but also focuses on their donated artworks and relationships to each other.
