We warmly invite you to a public guided tour through the special exhibition at the Theaterplatz Art Collections on Saturday, 5th December 2026, at 1:00 PM.

The exhibition Allegories of Life. Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt and Wolfgang Mattheuer dedicate themselves to pictures as a message in GDR art. Since the 1970s artists increasingly resorted to classical myths and literary materials in order to be able to place criticism subliminally in the picture on the basis of the heroic protagonist  as well as to be able to work on social issues.

For Wolfgang Mattheuer The Flight of Sisyphus (1972) is regarded as the prelude to a series of works on various myths. Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt, on the other hand, drew her artistic inspiration primarily from literature and poetry, which she translated into haunting, mostly black and white drawings and graphics of almost symbolic character.

The life and work paths of Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt and Wolfgang Mattheuer are closely linked. Despite this close personal connection, they developed independent artistic positions, that found great resonance both in the GDR and during the transition to reunified Germany.

The exhibition wants to open up precisely this range by not only celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt in 2026 and that of Wolfgang Mattheuer in 2027, but also by examining the major questions of life – individual, freedom and love – on the basis of the respective oeuvre.

Public tours are free of charge; only the regular museum entrance is to be paid. We kindly ask you to book the tickets via our online ticket shop, which you can also find as a tab on the right side of our webpage. The number of participants is limited to 24 people. Groups of 10 or more people are requested to pre-order guided tours due to the limited group size. Thank you very much!

Further dates can be found in our event calendar.

We look forward to seeing you!

Meeting point: Foyer of the Theaterplatz Art Collections

Vielen Dank!

Weitere Termine finden Sie in unserem Veranstaltungskalender.

Wir freuen uns auf Sie!
