We warmly invite you to our public guided tour in English at Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz on Sunday, November 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.

The special exhibition Myth. From gods to superheroines examines the meaning of ancient myths from the early modern period to the present day and shows how their motifs continue to affect art, film, comics and digital media to this day.

As ambassadors of fundamental truths, myths not only address persons of world-historical significance, but also symbolize the struggle for human change and human development.

A special focus of the exhibition is on art in the GDR period. Numerous artists resorted to mythological materials in order to negotiate social tensions, hopes and future designs in a pictorial way.

Public tours are free of charge; only the regular museum entrance is to be paid. We ask you to book the tickets via our online ticket shop, which you can also find on our website on the right as a tab. The number of participants is limited to 24 people. Groups of 10 or more people are requested to pre-order guided tours due to the limited group size. Thank you very much!

Wir laden Sie herzlich ein zur öffentlichen Führung durch die Sonderausstellung der Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz am Sonntag, dem 7. November 2026, um 13:00 Uhr.

Die Ausstellung Mythos. Von Göttern zu Superheldinnen untersucht die Bedeutung antiker Mythen von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart und zeigt, wie ihre Motive bis heute in Kunst, Film, Comic und digitalen Medien fortwirken.

Als Botschafter von grundlegenden Wahrheiten thematisieren Mythen nicht nur Personen von weltgeschichtlicher Bedeutung, sondern symbolisieren jeweils auch das Ringen um die menschliche Wandlung und den menschlichen Werdegang.

Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung liegt auf der Kunst in der DDR-Zeit. Zahlreiche Künstler:innen griffen auf mythologische Stoffe zurück, um gesellschaftliche Spannungen, Hoffnungen und Zukunftsentwürfe bildhaft zu verhandeln.

Öffentliche Führungen sind kostenfrei; lediglich der reguläre Museumseintritt ist zu entrichten. Wir bitten um Buchung der Tickets über unseren online Ticket-Shop, den Sie auch auf unserer Website rechts als Reiter finden. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 24 Personen begrenzt. Gruppen ab 10 Personen bitten wir Führungen aufgrund der begrenzten Gruppenstärke vorzubestellen. Vielen Dank!

Accessibility

For barrier-free access, a visitor guidance system with an inclusive floor guidance system, orientation boards with Braille and pyramid writing and an elevator at ground level to all exhibition floors are available at Theaterplatz. Further information can be found at inclusion and accessibility.

Museum Gunzenhauser

The Museum Gunzenhauser houses the collection of the Munich gallery owner Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser and holds more than 3,000 works by 270 artists, including works of classic modern art and from the second half of the 20th century. The owner is the Gunzenhauser Foundation.

Schloßbergmuseum

The Museum of History of the City of Chemnitz is housed in one of the most beautiful and best-preserved monastery sites in Saxony. Around 1135, Emperor Lothar ordered to build a Benedictine monastery on a ridge above the Chemnitz River, which would exist until the age of Reformation.

Rabenstein Castle

Rabenstein Castle is located in the Rabenstein district of Chemnitz and forms part of the Schloßbergmuseum. It was built in the second half of the 12th century during the settlement of the foothills of the Erzgebirge mountains. The frequently used nickname »Saxony’s smallest castle« is somewhat misleading in that the buildings still standing today make up only the heart of a formerly much larger complex.

Henry van de Velde Museum

Villa Esche was planned by the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde in 1902 as a family home for the Chemnitz-based textile manufacturer Herbert Esche. Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) was one of the most highly-regarded figures in European art in the early 20th century.
