We warmly invite you to the first anniversary of the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Ensemble! At the Festival of Expressionism, you can explore the family homes of one of the most important artists of the era.

With a varied and family-friendly programme, there is something for visitors of all ages. Let’s set out together to explore the diversity of Expressionism through creativity, culinary delights and other exciting programme highlights, and experience an unforgettable day full of inspiration and community.

Museum Gunzenhauser

The Museum Gunzenhauser houses the collection of the Munich gallery owner Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser and holds more than 3,000 works by 270 artists, including works of classic modern art and from the second half of the 20th century. The owner is the Gunzenhauser Foundation.

Schloßbergmuseum

The Museum of History of the City of Chemnitz is housed in one of the most beautiful and best-preserved monastery sites in Saxony. Around 1135, Emperor Lothar ordered to build a Benedictine monastery on a ridge above the Chemnitz River, which would exist until the age of Reformation.

Rabenstein Castle

Rabenstein Castle is located in the Rabenstein district of Chemnitz and forms part of the Schloßbergmuseum. It was built in the second half of the 12th century during the settlement of the foothills of the Erzgebirge mountains. The frequently used nickname »Saxony’s smallest castle« is somewhat misleading in that the buildings still standing today make up only the heart of a formerly much larger complex.

Henry van de Velde Museum

Villa Esche was planned by the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde in 1902 as a family home for the Chemnitz-based textile manufacturer Herbert Esche. Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) was one of the most highly-regarded figures in European art in the early 20th century.
