What do plates tell us about gender roles? More than you might think. That is why we warmly invite you to a reading from Annabelle Hirsch’s book Der Teller on 20 August 2026.
Read by the actress Alida Bohnen, Der Teller takes us on a journey through the centuries, in which the seemingly mundane is always political. From the laid table of the 18th century, through the militant ‘Votes for Women’ plates of the suffragettes, to the feminist dinner party (by Judy Chicago): the author shows that a plate was never just a plate. It is a stage, a battlefield and, at times, a place of resistance. The story tells of women who went hungry, whether by choice or by force, but also of those who celebrated, cooked, demanded and dreamed.
Come along with a curiosity and an appetite for new perspectives and exciting stories.
Special: Be inspired by the stories and paint your own future favourite plate. Materials will be provided.
Alida Bohnen is an actress who has appeared in numerous film and theatre productions. She is currently engaged at the Städtisches Theater Chemnitz.
