Works for the Stage
Costume and Set Designs by Ralf Winkler

Iridescent textiles, will-o’-the-wisps in the forest, masks of garish colour, towering trees, blue glows, heavy cloaks, and magical gossamer webs were a constant source of fascination and surprise for many Chemnitz theatre-goers. This exhibition is dedicated to the life work of Ralf Winkler (1936–2009), chief costume and set designer for Theatres Chemnitz for many years. On view are hand drawings, studies, collages, set designs, and a wide assortment of working materials from Winkler’s estate. These items enable the exciting creative process of an artist to unfold – an artist whose impressive costumes for Wagner’s Ring cycle in 2001 helped to make the Chemnitz production a major sensation.
