The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is showing the first museum exhibition by the artist Stefan Vogel, who works in Leipzig. In Relax, it’s only paranoia, he restages the exhibition spaces of the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz in the form of a cellar along with its raw materiality. These artificial spaces, in which memories and unfinished projects are stored unfinished projects are stored, are to be experienced and traversed by the audience in order to encounter the refuse of the unfinished and the failed. The cellar is the skull site of repressed, failed designs. It is the underground of disappointed hopes for a better life in the utopia of a home of one’s own. But like everything repressed, disappointment leads a life of its own. To stage this life, Stefan Vogel has chosen a “room-in-room” construction that completely lines the exhibition space and transforms it into a cellar. In this newly created space, the visitor is led through the labyrinth of image production to finally find himself in a large picture. Here, the aesthetic of the material does not lose its promising potential, but rather traces the living utopia of the repressed: the happy failure.
