With the support of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the Saxon State Agency for Museums and the City of Chemnitz, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz has succeeded in acquiring the important painting Junger Mann mit Pfeife (c. 1920) by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and thus permanently securing it for the public. Back in 2020, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz were able to acquire Schmidt-Rottluff’s painting Haus am Augustmittag from a private collection with the help of the association Die Freunde der Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and Volksbank Chemnitz. With the acquisition of the two paintings, the important Schmidt-Rottluff collection will be enriched by important works and the significance of the internationally renowned artist in Chemnitz will be strengthened.

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, born in 1884 in Rottluff near Chemnitz, is one of the most important artists of the 20th century in Germany. As a founding member of the artists’ association Die Brücke, the expressionist painter is probably the best-known son of the city of Chemnitz. His works of art form the canon of the city’s cultural identity in the field of 20th century art. The preservation and expansion of this collection is given great attention and enjoys a high priority due to its artistic significance.
