Ubuntu – The other me!
Scarcely ever has the speed of technical change been as great as now. What constitutes our being human today when artificial intelligence, algorithms and deep learning are changing our way of being in the world and taking over more and more tasks in, for example, everyday life and at work? We entrust our money matters to them, rely on them in traffic, in airplanes and even when it comes to steering weapons. Constantly developing technology has also found its way into art. In his expansive installation Ubuntu – Das andere Ich! the artist Simon Weckert, who grew up in Chemnitz, explores the question of what happens to us when we define ourselves by means of autonomous machines. He addresses the theme of the possible impacts of digitization in his works, whereby his main focus is reflecting on current social issues: What constitutes humanity in our day, in our life marked by digitization? How can we position ourselves as disassociated from machines? Recently Weckert caused quite a stir with his performance Goolge Maps Hacks.
