Vier Frauen. Vier Lebensläufe
Fotografieren in der DDR
The main artists featured in the exhibition – Christine Stephan-Brosch, Evelyn Krull, Gerdi Sippel and May Voigt – are linked by the common thread of life in the GDR and their work as photographers. The show presents works created up to Germany’s political turning point in 1989 and offers different takes on the social and political realities.
Christine Stephan-Brosch, who has done portraits of a large number of artists since the 1960s, is closely associated with Saxony’s cultural scene. Evelyn Krull’s view of the human body in her works has a captivating effect. She was already photographing nudes in the 1970s. Gerdi Sippel captures various processes of the world of work in her photographs. Light plays a decisive role in May Voigt’s deliberately underexposed shots.
