Wallpapers from the collection

For the first time in the history of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, a representative selection is being shown of the holdings of precious wallpapers dating from the period around 1900, some of which have never been exhibited before. Today the Textile and Decorative Arts collection in Chemnitz has more than 1000 samples of wallpaper thanks to targeted purchases of complete pattern books from French dealers as well as comprehensive donations, such as for example by the Chemnitz wallpaper manufacturer Max Langhammer. Not only Saxon, German and Austrian manufacturers are included, but also numerous English, American and French specimens. With their opulent flower arrangements, ornamental friezes and in some cases strictly geometrical patterns, the wallpapers dating from the Art Nouveau era indicate how sophisticated elegance in everyday life became affordable for more people.

Accessibility

For barrier-free access, a visitor guidance system with an inclusive floor guidance system, orientation boards with Braille and pyramid writing and an elevator at ground level to all exhibition floors are available at Theaterplatz. Further information can be found at inclusion and accessibility.

Museum Gunzenhauser

The Museum Gunzenhauser houses the collection of the Munich gallery owner Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser and holds more than 3,000 works by 270 artists, including works of classic modern art and from the second half of the 20th century. The owner is the Gunzenhauser Foundation.

Schloßbergmuseum

The Museum of History of the City of Chemnitz is housed in one of the most beautiful and best-preserved monastery sites in Saxony. Around 1135, Emperor Lothar ordered to build a Benedictine monastery on a ridge above the Chemnitz River, which would exist until the age of Reformation.

Rabenstein Castle

Rabenstein Castle is located in the Rabenstein district of Chemnitz and forms part of the Schloßbergmuseum. It was built in the second half of the 12th century during the settlement of the foothills of the Erzgebirge mountains. The frequently used nickname »Saxony’s smallest castle« is somewhat misleading in that the buildings still standing today make up only the heart of a formerly much larger complex.

Henry van de Velde Museum

Villa Esche was planned by the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde in 1902 as a family home for the Chemnitz-based textile manufacturer Herbert Esche. Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) was one of the most highly-regarded figures in European art in the early 20th century.

Together with the neighboring residential mill, where Karl Schmidt-Rottluff spent his childhood, the ensemble will become another hotspot of Expressionism in Chemnitz.
