On the occasion of the donation from the estate of Thomas Heumann in memory of his father Carl Heumann, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is showing some 70 graphic sheets from the Carl and Thomas Heumann Collection. Among them are works by Christian Friedrich Gille, August Gaul, Adolph von Menzel and Ernst Barlach.
The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz present fragments of late antique and early Islamic clothing and furnishing textiles from the holdings of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. The textiles, which were made between the 4th and 9th centuries, were found mainly in tombs in Upper Egypt. The holdings of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz comprise some 600 fabric fragments from the post-Pharaonic period, which were added to the collection in 1909 as a gift from the Chemnitz industrialist Hans Vogel. The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz – Schloßbergmuseum present a cross-section of the work of Werner Klemke (1917-1994), who was one of the most renowned commercial graphic artists, book designers and illustrators in the former GDR. The objects – posters, books, caricatures, erotic miniatures – come from the collection of the Klemke expert Matthias Haberzettl from Augsburg.
Although the focus of the Munich gallery owner and collector Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser was on figurative painting of Classic Modernism, his collection also contains works by important protagonists of abstraction. With them, the collector demonstrated an extraordinary sense for the quality and relevance of individual contemporary artistic positions. A selection is presented in this exhibition. It illustrates the development of abstraction after 1945.
The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz am Theaterplatz present 59 sculptures, models and drawings by the Lithuanian-born French-American sculptor Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973). The highlight of the exhibition is the only and oldest preserved plasticine model (1943-45) in the world for the bronze casting Benediction. Following its transfer from the artist’s former studio in the USA, the monumental model is now on public display for the first time.
Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Grafiken des BRÜCKE-Künstlers Karl Schmidt-Rottluff gehören seit Langem zu den Stil prägenden Werken der Klassischen Moderne. Weniger bekannt sind seine kunsthandwerklichen Arbeiten, die er zeitlebens schuf und innerhalb seines künstlerischen OEuvres als gleichberechtigt ansah. Sie entstanden meist für Freunde, Familienmitglieder und Sammler, blieben dadurch in der Anonymität des privaten Besitzes und waren somit nur selten in Ausstellungen zu sehen.
The presentation brings together an extensive collection of diverse contemporary positions. On display are paintings, sculptures, installations, collages, watercolours, drawings, photographs and the most diverse printing techniques. Thanks to the donation of the Bastian family, the contemporary art holdings of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz have been considerably expanded. It comprises over 200 individual works by international artists from Belgium, China, Germany, France, Greece, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Spain and the USA.

Toys and Christmas figures from the Erzgebirge from the Claus Leichsenring collection are presented. The so-called mass-produced figures, which were created over a period of about 150 years, were primarily made of papier-mâché.
